This project was executed under Midcon Builds' 'Won and Run' model for the United States Air Force. Midcon Builds identified the opportunity, developed the winning proposal, supported project estimating, and took on essential project leadership roles such as Project Manager, Design Project Manager, Environmental Manager, Quality Control Manager, Safety Coordinator, and Specifier for the Prime Contractor.
The objective of the Tyndall Air Force Base Project XLWU 21-8107, which involved the design-build construction to relocate the generator facility (B42), was to move an existing emergency generator to meet future mission needs. This design-build project encompassed the design and construction of a new 192-square-foot pre-engineered metal building (PEMB) to house the relocated generator, alongside all necessary mechanical, electrical, architectural, and site improvements to ensure a complete and operational facility.
The project adhered to the Department of Defense building standards and the Florida Building Code, incorporating the High Velocity Hurricane Zone (HVHZ) requirements. Additional work involved approximately 2,500 linear feet of horizontal directional boring near the Tyndall AFB runway within the active flight line environment, as well as the installation of associated utility infrastructure and the demolition and abandonment of the existing generator facility.
Extensive coordination was required for design development, permitting, horizontal utility construction, runway and flight line access, quality control, safety management, environmental compliance, procurement, construction execution, and project closeout activities to effectively support Air Force mission requirements.
Overall, the project was completed safely, on schedule, and within budget.
